Don't give the credit card companies the last laugh

5 February 2005

There’s never been a better time to transfer your credit and store card debt to a 0% credit card. But usually the card companies have the last laugh. They rely on you not keeping track of the deal’s expiry date - that’s what makes it worthwhile for them.

‘Most people keep track of their cards with a piece of paper in a drawer’ says Pete Robbins, of Bridgewater Software, creator of CardTracker.co.uk. ‘The card issuers depend on you forgetting when the interest-free period expires. For £5 a year you can register as many cards with CardTracker as you want, and then forget about them. We will remind you by email that the interest period is coming to an end – in time for you to take out another 0% deal and transfer the balances to the new card.’

‘You can ask us to remind you of your payment dates too. It makes staying in charge of your credit cards a no-brainer.’

‘We keep up with the new card offers too’ adds Pete. ‘Just click on a link to take you to a new deal.’

‘The first time you forget about the interest period on a card coming to an end, the cost in interest alone could be well over £50. For £5 a year you really do need never pay another penny in interest payments.’
