E-commerce Pioneer, Greg Danzig of Charge.com, Celebrates 10 Years of Setting up Merchant

14 August 2005

With the World Wide Web now an element of everyday life for tens of millions around the globe, Internet business pioneers who have stayed the course are beginning to celebrate ten years of doing business online, including , a company specializing in credit card processing software and setting up merchant accounts.

“When we started out, the Internet was novel and still a bit controversial as an environment for business, but now it’s an ordinary and essential way to do business,” says Greg Danzig, CEO of Charge.com, which celebrates its tenth anniversary on Thursday, Aug. 11.

Currently, as it did in 1995, Charge.com provides retail, online, mail order and phone order companies with merchant accounts to accept credit cards, along with related hardware and software.

“Back then, we felt like we were trailblazers, colonizing a new territory and helping others do the same," says Danzig, who founded the Fort Lauderdale-based company in 1995. "It certainly wasn’t obvious then that the Web would take off the way it has.”

Charge.com’s annual operating income has subsequently grown into the millions of dollars, he added, in the fields of credit card processing and setting up .

“Although our mission hasn’t changed, we’ve enjoyed seeing some of the innovations we spearheaded for our industry become commonplace,” Danzig says. “We were the first merchant services company not to charge an application fee, which was then $100 or more, whether the merchant was approved for credit card processing or not. Now, virtually no one on the Internet charges an application fee for a merchant account. Likewise, we’ve recently started giving away the software needed to accept credit cards, whereas other companies typically charge $300 or more for setup and software.”

In the coming months and years, many of the first Internet companies will also turn ten: eBay.com, launched in 1995, turns ten in September. Hotmail, MSNBC and Travelocity were launched in 1996. Google was launched commercially in 1997, as was CNN.com.

As Danzig reflects on the keys to his company’s survival, he notes that he was always careful to steer clear of Internet hype.

“We've always just run it the same way you would run any kind of business. You have to take in more than you spend. You can make money online. It won't always be overnight, but it is the best business environment ever created.”
