MOHELA Board Reaffirms Support for Governor's Plan14 March 2006
The Higher Education Loan Authority of the State of Missouri (MOHELA) voted today to repeal and re-adopt resolutions that they had previously adopted January 24 and 31, 2006. These resolutions involved an agreement to cooperate fully with Missouri Governor Matt Blunt to fund the $450 million Lewis & Clark Discovery Initiative he proposed in January. Edits to MOHELA's funding plan were suggested and unanimously adopted by the members. The vote came after MOHELA members received nearly 50 letters and emails and heard 19 people address comments in person at a public meeting attended by more than 100 people at The Lodge of Four Seasons. Additionally, Interim Executive Director Raymond H. Bayer, Jr. announced that MOHELA had hired Liscarnan Solutions, LLC. to conduct a financial review of the Authority, to help it decide how to best package the selected assets to be sold to fund the Governor's Initiative. Their report is expected by June, 2006. MOHELA is one of the largest nonprofit student loan secondary markets in America, and is a leading holder and servicer of student loans with more than $5.2 billion in assets, and loan purchase activity in excess of $1.2 billion per year. MOHELA advances its benevolent mission of eliminating barriers for students so they can access higher education through local, regional and national partnerships with a variety of educational and financial institutions.
