New Web Site Educates People About Identity Theft

22 April 2006

Kaysville, UT (PRWEB) April 19, 2006 -- Over the past decade, identity theft has become a real problem. In an effort to try and combat identity theft, the federal government has created several laws to try and protect identities. FACTA and HIPAA are two of these laws. With so many laws, regulations and issues at hand, it may be difficult to determine what needs to be done. The new Paper Shredder Info (http://www.paper-shredder-info.com) Web site provides a wide variety of information, resources, FAQs and more. The goal of the new Web site is to educate the general public.

In June 2005, a law went into effect that requires anyone who has one or more employees to properly destroy their personal information when being discarded. This new law is called the «Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act» (FACTA). Few people are aware of this new law and even fewer are aware of the penalties involved if it is not followed. This act is designed to protect private employee information. This is the biggest personal ID protection act issued since HIPAA.

HIPAA is another of the more widely known identification laws recently implemented by the federal government. HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. The HIPAA law regulates and protects patient health records and information. According to HIPAA, a patient's information must be properly stored, secured and destroyed. If a patient's information is no longer needed, it cannot be thrown into the garbage. It must be destroyed. The most popular and effective way of destroying this information is by shredding it.

Paper Shredder Info provides information on identity theft, how to prevent it and what to do if you become a victim. The Web site also goes into great detail on what laws have been put into place and what they mean. A large list of links is provided to a variety of government entities that deal with identity theft. Readers will find a glossary with helpful definitions on commonly used terms in the industry.
